Synergy! Momentum! Expert! Guru!

I keep seeing these sorts of words scattered about the internet by people and businesses alike. Do they even mean anything?

expert

A lot of these buzz words make things seem more professional. Whether the content is actually meaningful, or meaningless! Buzz words make things appealing. Like sugar in your coffee. They are what draw you in, and get you interested.

So why can’t content be interesting on its own? Because that’s not how you reach people!

The concept does upset me a little bit. If I put the words “Social Media Expert” on my twitter and just post (or repost) links I find relating to Social Media stuff does that really make me an expert? Yes: because you apparently have insight as to what people like, and getting what people like out to them is a big part of social media. No: because that information is already there, and you’re just a gateway. Dare I say, a tool?

However, that’s how you meet people with similar interests. That’s how you connect, and that’s why you use buzz words. The buzz words help you get people to think what you’re saying is interesting. I’ve read plenty of articles about things I’m not interested in because the headlines are written well.

You might not even know what any of those buzz words mean, but if you don’t use them then less people will listen to you. That’s what the internet is about these days: putting yourself out there. The internet has its own colloquy, and you just have to learn how to speak its language. Just like people have body language, so does Social Media.

So are buzz words pointless? No, they’re not. Are they being abused? I think so. The internet feels like it’s being torn apart by people who abuse these buzz words. I’m just an average person, like you. But I could easily be an expert, all I’d have to do is say that I was!
